Chapter 18

‘We did have a cold. The whole family did. Lots of people seemed to have it, but then it was February, a common time for colds. Are you sure this is relevant?’ Ianto asked.

Roman and I nodded. ‘Was it a bad cold?’

‘Not really. It was just a cold. Annoying, inconvenient, especially when Lou caught it and her nose was so bunged up she couldn’t breathe, but there was nothing special about it.’

Oh, yes there was, something very special indeed.

‘Who caught it first?’ Roman asked.

‘Mum, I think, then Dad, and he gave it to me. Are you saying, if they hadn’t caught it, none of them might have died?’

Roman shrugged, and I could see he didn’t want to give a definitive answer. ‘It is too early in our research to say.’

Ianto sighed. ‘Can’t do anything about it now anyway.’

‘That’s where you’re wrong,’ I said. ‘If we can find out why you and Lou survived and Mum, Dad, and Meg didn’t, then maybe, just maybe, we can work out how to stop this thing. By me, I mean Roman and Leticia.’

Ianto inhaled sharply. Oops. I’d forgotten about their relationship for a moment.

‘Leticia.’ Ianto’s voice was flat. ‘Is she around?’

I looked to Roman for guidance. ‘In the past, yes. Now? I have no idea. I have not seen her for months. She left for the States when there was a rumour that the CDC in Atlanta might be on to something.’

‘CDC?’

‘Center for Disease Control.’

‘Oh.’ A pause. ‘And were they?’ Ianto asked.

‘Not that I know of.’

Silence for a moment. I hoped Roman wouldn’t break it. Ianto was well on the way to accepting that we might want a blood sample. I didn’t want to exert too much influence. If he arrived at the conclusion all by himself as to why we needed it, he’d be more amenable to donating some.

Ianto sighed. ‘I was praying they’d give Meg something stronger than effing painkillers, like antibiotics or something, but the doctors said antibiotics don’t work against a virus.’

Roman shrugged. ‘They were right. Antibiotics don’t work. Antivirals help, but I remember all the stocks being used up within a couple of weeks. Pharma companies could not manufacture them quickly enough to keep up with demand. What we need is a virucide.’

‘A what?’ Ianto asked.

‘A virucide. It kills off viruses.’

‘So why isn’t there one?’

‘Several have been developed but they destroy so many normal cells along with the viruses, that you are dead either way,’ Roman said.

Ianto looked first at me then at Roman. This was it, this was the moment...

‘That’s why you need a sample of my blood? You think there’s some difference between me and Meg which will show why she died and I didn’t.’

‘Not exactly,’ I said. ‘We think the difference is between you and me. Why you live and I don’t.’

‘Oh.’

‘Can I use the bathroom?’ I asked, and Roman uttered a faint snort of disbelief which he turned into a hasty cough when I glared at him.

‘You know where it is. I’m sorry, I forgot my manners; can I offer you a drink?’ Ianto said to Roman as I walked out of the kitchen.
